Since this forum is starting to bleed out a little I thought it'd be a nice idea to start some new discussions. So I'll kick off, what's your top 10 favorite rune maps of all time? I'm really interested to see what you guys come up with and maybe there are some nice mapsuggestions in there.
My personal top 10:
10. DM-Constable
It's a smaller sized FFA map that's just a blast to play. Not recommended to play with more than 6 players.
9. DM-Thorstadt
A default map, I feel this one isn't as popular among all runeplayers and isn't played as much. I think the reason behind that is because this map usually has a lot of shieldplay and no battleaxe or battlehammer lying around. This is exactly the reason why do I like this map, it gives you different kind of gameplay than any other map. After playing a lot of maps where the battleaxe is dominating I think it becomes a bit generic and boring, switch that up with other maps that require other skills and I'm happy again. Due to the large size of this map it's also a great map to use tactics in and play some big clanwars in, I absolutely love this map.
8. DM-Warlock
A classic TDM map that has a great structure and is very fun to play. This map has been created by Mike Oriain Ryan and he made more awesome classic maps such as DM-Cutter, DM-Wendol][, DM-GreaterHall, DM-BitterFish and DM-Kutaligates. Even though he's one of the best runemappers out there, this is my favorite.
7. DM-SunGarden
Outdoors, birds whistling happy songs, sun shining in your face... What is not to love about this map? It has great open areas with ruins in the middle to climb, you get a good overview from above and it the visuals aren't bad either. I feel this map is highly underrated and should be played more often.
5. DM-Gudhem
A great map made by =[VnB]=Shexpeare, this is the perfect example of how a simple map can be so awesome. It's fast-paced with all the main fighting happening in the main area. People are jumping down from DWS or DBA and the structure actually works out pretty well. This map was hosted a lot on Violent New Breed servers and I feel it never really catched on to HoV. This map will always be a classic on 1.0.
5. DM-Jormundr
This map has to be one of my favorite FFA maps out there. It's a big open cube surrounded by rocks and lava where the map is located in, it has 3 floors and all the main fights are usually happening downstairs. It's hard to describe my love for this map but there is a certain feel and vibe to it that I just love. This map was always hosted on Lethal Seven and 7sins servers on 1.0.
4. DM-Hildir
During all these years I've played Rune I think this is the map I've played the most. I think this map along with Bothvar/Hudson/Misbegotten and Ostara are hosted and played the most on all popular TDM/DM servers. Even though I enjoy playing those maps too, I personally think there are better maps around. I still feel that Hildir deserves a spot on my list. We all know this map so I don't think it needs any introduction. The map has a good designed structure that works very well for some quick action or even more serious games such as a clanwar.
3. DM-Konphlicted
I remember playing this map on the CHAOS *HQ* server back in 2001/2002, I was still a kid and that server brings back a lot of memories. It was hosting awesome maps such as FSU-Frostnatt, FrenziedRuins, ForFookSake, Furnace and Konphlicted. I still love all of these maps, even though it might be my pure blinded nostalgia speaking here Konphlicted doesn't look stunning or have a well thought structure, it's a simple cylinder shaped map with lava in the middle. There is a platform above the lava that's only reachable by elevators. It's simple, mindless but enormously funny to play. I have no idea why this is one of my favorite maps, but I'm just loving it.
2. DM-Cursed
This map is a default map that came with UT99 and got ported to Rune shortly after it got released. I personally didn't like the map that much in Unreal Tournament due to the close combat and the close corridors, I feel like UT had better maps to offer. The map has been created by Cliff Bleszinski and he's a well known face in the gamesindustry nowadays. The visuals was great for the time, it was made in 1998/1999 before Rune got even released and it looked a lot better than most maps around during those periods. Having said that, I absolutely love this map on Rune. The structure is amazing and it feels like there is so much thought behind every room or location. Everything has at least 2 ways to come and the long hall on the down area is just a great place to gather and kill some.
1. DM-ForFookSake][
This map is the complete package: Great visuals and fluent gameplay. Laura van Dijk was uncontested back in the days and made stunning maps such as this beauty, DM-Forlorn, DM-Obstinate and DM-Torment. I think she hasn't made any maps in over 10 years but her maps are still among the most beautiful and best out there. She makes beautiful architecture and the level of detail is impressive, even more impressive when you realise the fact that these maps are already so old. I think I've played this map for the first time on Chaos HQ server and I remember Rahbalder used to host this on his servers a lot as well. This map is definitely my favorite map of all time.
